FAQs
Everything You Need To Know
What is the difference between a pink slip and a blue slip?
A pink slip (eSafety Check) is the annual inspection required for vehicles over five years old to renew registration in NSW. A blue slip is needed for unregistered, interstate, or modified vehicles before they can be registered. Both confirm roadworthiness but apply to different situations, and only an Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) can issue them.
How long does a rego check take and how much does it cost?
A standard rego check usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the vehicle. As of July 2025, fees range from $26 to $51, based on vehicle type. Once your vehicle passes, the inspection is sent electronically to Transport for NSW, and your pink slip remains valid for six months for registration renewal.
What happens if my car fails a rego check?
If your vehicle fails, you’ll receive a Repairs Needed report listing the issues to be fixed. You have 14 days to complete the repairs and return for a free re-inspection. After that period, a new inspection fee applies. Completing repairs promptly helps avoid registration delays and ensures your car remains safe and compliant.
